Spottsville Kentucky is a small town located just off Highway 60 and just East of Henderson Kentucky right on the Green River, which, by the way, is the deepest river in the USA
.
Most of the land around Spottsville was owned by Lazarus Whitehead Powell (October 6, 1812 - July 3, 1867) who was the 19thGovernor of Kentucky, serving from 1851 to 1855. He was later elected to represent Kentucky in the U.S. Senate from 1859 to 1865.
He was also a slave owner.

Mary Jane Folder was 115 years old and the oldest living person in Kentucky at the time this photo was taken. She called Governor Lazarus Powell, “Massa”.
She was one of his slaves.
This little Church is located just West of Spottsville. It was, I believe, originally, a Methodist Church. Or at least it was early on. It became the Kindred Spirit Charismatic Church for a while and it was also, the Ridgewood Chapel.
At one time, its Pastor was Little Joe Hatfield.
Little Joe Hatfield lived in Henderson and his wife Veronica is still involved with one of the local Pentecostal Churches in town. Little Joe was a musician and song writer of note. He performed and wrote music for the Singing Rambo’s, staring Dottie Rambo. Dottie was an Emmy winning Gospel singer and song writer. Little Joe traveled to Vietnam with Dottie to entertain the troops during the Vietnam War.
During his time with the Church, people would drive by and throw stones through the windows at the Pentecostals, and also, they would break in during the week and have beer parties in the church. At the time, there was no running water and Veronica and some of the ladies would have to haul water up to clean up the mess made by the vandals.
Why do I tell you all of this?

Because, buried behind this little church is a gentleman that fought with Napoleon at Waterloo and who received a commendation from Napoleon himself, This man was a blacksmith by trade and came to the United States after most of his land had been confiscated by the government he was fighting for. His name was Yost Scheck. After a while, here in the states, probably due to a heavy accent, the name became Yost Jake and finally, Jost Jake and
he was my Great Grand Father.
he was my Great Grand Father.
Here is his stone and that of my Great Grandmother, originally, Margot Schaeffer.
